Women have periods. Women also have opinions. Although when a woman needs to form a opinion about something she disagrees with, we have the classic…
Are you on your period or something?
We’re living, breathing human beings, not just walking tampons. Women should be allowed to form an opinion whenever they want and it should be listened to, not just dismissed as ‘hormonal’ or ‘hysterical’ just because it is wrongly assumed that they’re on their period.
Girls are great. There are some truly amazing women in this world, who have done some truly amazing things. Changed our entire Earth, but when a woman is upset about something it’s assumed by people that they must be on their period, because they can’t be upset or angry or passionate any other time.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel like changing the world when I’m on my period. I feel moody sometimes, but I generally just feel tired and unwell. But if I get annoyed at somebody, I’ll always be asked if I’m on my period and most of the time the answer is no.
It’s also the idea that women are like evil dragons when they’re on their period. Us and our period become this feared unknown, this disgusting, vile, unclean thing. Well my good friends, I think I’ll go with the classic argument on this one.
If people were as disgusted by rape as they are with periods, the world would be a much better place
But the thing is normal people, good people, blame a period for a woman’s mood. I did until very recently. Only last week did I put down my Mum’s anxiety and agitations to ‘probably hormones or something’ (written in my Weekly Journal) I was trying to be considerate, but I was wrongly dismissing her feelings , because I’ve had the idea drilled into my head that ‘when a woman is angry she is probably on her period and you should leave her alone and not listen to a word she says’ My mother wasn’t even on her period, but was actually stressed because of work. I feel awful about this and have now apologized.
I hope you found my mini ramble interesting, my brain has sort of gone mushy so I’m sorry if this was really badly written and I kept repeating myself. Please engage in the discussion in the comments, I love to read your opinions.
Thank you so much for reading,
Alex

I totally agree. It’s an example of everyday sexism that is tired and outdated.

Sexism is tired and outdated in general. I think this is an example of casual sexism, something that’s been drilled into our brains and fits into a society that on the surface believes in gender equality. Thanks so much for reading my post!

How true. The way that men feel so threatened by a woman with an opinion that they have to find a way to trivialise it, is either laughable or very very depressing. And whilst we’re on period controversies – tampon tax, anyone? I despair of society a bit sometimes. X

I totally agree and the tampon tax, drives me up the wall. Our periods are natural things we have little control over, we need tampons as much as we need toilet paper or shower gel. If people can’t afford tampons, imagine how insecure and embarrassed they could feel. A tampon is not a luxury item, it’s a necessity.

It’s beyond ridiculous, don’t even get me started. And the fact that Jaffa cakes, edible cake decorations, crocodile meat and lottery tickets are all classed as essentials. Insane. X

Oh man, I don’t know how I’d survive without my daily dose of crocodile meat, don’t you just love it?

I’d prefer to decorate cakes than wear a tampon during my period, idk about you guys

Right? And I mean, we all know a Jaffa cake a day keeps the doctor away. -_-

THANK YOU. I hate it when people do this! I get it all the time, and it’s just rude. But we all do it, even girls!

ALL of this is SO true! It’s really annoying at school when boys see a girl upset and just dismiss her feelings, saying ‘Oh she’s on her period’. This then makes the girl even more upset, because it doesn’t matter if she’s on her period or NOT, that’s still insulting and what made her upset had nothing to do with her period. Plus, this has happened to me before too and it’s so annoying ahhh. Good post though 🙂 xx

Thank you so much for reading and I know right, it’s just making the girl feel like her emotions don’t matter !!

Beautifully written post! The comparison of periods to rape and how the world would be a better place was a great comparison and really eye opening. Men should understand that women, like any other human being, get emotional and it dosnet mean anything more than that.

Fantastic post!! I absolutely hate when people say this to me, cos it’s just plain wrong for people to dismiss a woman’s feelings- whether they’re on their period or not. Some women do get hormonal and emotional (I’m one of them- I kid you not, I’ve been in floods of tears going “I don’t even know why I’m crying”- it’s actually quite funny really) but it doesn’t mean that there’s not other reasons a woman could be upset- and assuming it’s cos of a period is just so presumptuous, wrong and insulting.

This is probably one of the most frustrating things I hear people say to others. Strangely, when I have it I’m even more pleasant than usual, or that’s what my friends have said. I think it’s just a mechanism to prove people wrong by trying to not be cranky. 😛

I’m normally more cranky right before my period and then I’m just ill before my period. But it’s really infuriating and it needs to be recognized 😦

Very wise and insightful, HappyAlexx! These things hadn’t occured to me before, but I see it now. You and your followers are right. I sort of ignore people and realize that if they knew better, they would do better kind of thing. I learned that from Brittany Gunderson. The thing about people being as disgusted by rape as they are our periods, would make the world a better place, I have never heard that before. It is a very smart point. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions. I do enjoy reading your posts.😊
